Honors Composition CoverHonors Composition: Historical Perspectives and Contemporary Practices. National Collegiate Honors Council Monograph Series, 2003.

A review of scholarship on post-secondary honors education demonstrates that honors instruction focuses upon developing critical thinking skills; similarly, composition and language theorists argue that writing instruction, both in the composition classroom and throughout the college curriculum, is a key tool in developing critical thinking and argumentation skills. Therefore, the author contends that honors students need to strengthen critical thinking skills and that participation in a comprehensive writing program designed specifically for honors students is essential in strengthening such skills. To facilitate development of such programs, the author provides a set of guidelines that include program admission exercises, first-year honors composition courses, upper-division seminars, thesis and capstone projects, and extracurricular writing activities. Data and sample projects were gathered through a survey of composition components from over 300 National Collegiate Honors Council member college and programs at two-year, four-year, and graduate degree-granting institutions. Guideline sections also include discussion of differentiation between honors and non-honors courses and writing assignments. From these guidelines, honors deans and directors and writing program administrators can readily adapt and develop honors composition components which meet their honors students’ needs in building critical thinking and argumentation skills.
