Resumes

You introduce yourself to potential employers or graduate school programs through your resume.  It showcases your accomplishments and skills, while also demonstrating why you are a good fit for the advertised position or program. Unlike a job application, a resume should only advertise the relevant information for interview consideration. Since many organizations use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to review resumes, you will want to make sure you have an ATS-friendly resume to use when submitting online through an application portal. You may still choose to have a more creative-styled resume to use in person at networking events, career fairs, conferences, or interviews.

Resume Quick Tips

  • Make it easy to read: Use a plain font in 10- to 12-point type.
  • Focus on information that is relevant to the employer, position, or graduate school program.
  • Keep your resume short: In general, a new grad’s resume should be one side of a single page, but can run longer if your experiences and skills are relevant to the job.
  • Include keywords taken directly from the job or program description.
  • Quantify your outcome statements whenever possible.
