â–¼ Will my parents know I visited the SHC?
No. All visits are strictly confidential.
â–¼ Once I graduate from USA, can I be seen at SHC?
You are allowed one visit in the semester following your graduation. This visit is
to get any referrals needed to continue care outside of USA Student Health.
â–¼ Do you treat spouses and children of enrolled students?
No. Only currently enrolled students are eligible to be seen at SHC.
Health Insurance and Billing
â–¼ Does USA offer a Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)?
Yes. The current USA SHIP is provided by United Healthcare Student Resources. You
can find out more about this plan by calling (251) 460-6022 or via email studentinsurance@southalabama.edu.
â–¼ How do I pay for a visit?
All charges for the visit will be billed to your insurance. Any remaining balance
after the insurance company pays will be billed to the student.
â–¼ Do I have a co-pay?
Most likely. You will need to check with your insurance to see how much. Those students
with the SHIP do not have a co-pay when seen at SHC.
â–¼ What if I can not pay at the time of visit?
At SHC we do not turn anyone away for being unable to pay. We will bill for any remaining
balance that insurance does not cover.
â–¼ If I do not have health insurance can I be seen?
Yes. Students are not required to have insurance to be seen at SHC. We do recommend
that students are covered under an insurance plan to help offset the cost while attending
USA. You will be billed for all services performed at SHC at a rate decided by SHC.
â–¼ I have a billing question, who to contact?
You can call SHC at (251) 460-7151 for any billing questions.
â–¼ Are services free?
No. All services will be billed to your insurance.
Medical Care
â–¼ Do you have after hours care?
No. You may call and leave a message for the staff to return the next business day.
If it is an emergency please dial 911 or go to the nearest Emergency room.
â–¼ If I get allergy injections can I get those at SHC?
Yes. Please see our Allergy shots page.
â–¼ I am not feeling well and no appointments are available. What should I do?
You can call (251) 460-7151 to speak with a triage nurse.
â–¼ Are class excuses provided?
Class excuses are given at the discretion of the provider. You must be seen by one of our providers to receive a class excuse.
Privacy and Confidentiality
â–¼ How do I request my medical records?
Please fill out the Authorization to disclose health records.
â–¼ Can my parents request a copy of my medical records?
No. We must have your permission to release your medical records to your parents.
Immunizations and TB screening
â–¼ What are the immunization requirements for new students?
All students born after 1956 must show proof of 2 doses of a measles containing vaccine,
one of which must be a MMR. Also you will need to fill out a TB questionnaire. All
students living on campus and all international students must have received a meningitis
vaccine (ACWY) within the last 5 years.
